CLUB NEWS !!
End of season once again !!
Well its that time of the year again !!!
Put the outdoor bowls away and get the indoor ones out, if you're that way inclined, or relax for the winter!!
Well what more can we say this season the WALNUT TREE has had excellent success all around with the highlight being the 'B' Team reversing the leagues placing of last season with the 'A' team in the Thurday evening Civil Defence Bowling League.
Congratulations to all the players from the 'B' team. Maybe thay wil want to change thier name to the 'A' team next season !!
The Wednesday night league under Carl Povey claimed the 'Double' in division 2 wiinning both the league and the Dave Butterworth Shield.
Whilst the Tuesday night team just got pipped in the final of the Lewis Cup by Rice lane in September.
Trisha Pritchard went on to take the Monday night team the furthest it has ever got by clinching a fourth placing just finishing ahead of the Brooke Hotel. A great position considering the strength of the league.
The Walnut Tree 'A' team lost in the final of the subsidiary cup to Sylvestrians after finding the handicap of 56 chalks to much to pull back.
Individually Paul Thorpe won the Civil Defence League Merit Tournament for the second tim. Congratulations to Paul on this excellent achievement.
Robbie Warbrick & Danny Laven took the league Pairs after being 18-9 down to Ray Rushton & Dave Milligan on a rain drenched Crescent green. This was Robbies first major achievement in bowls so congratulations to him in particular.
Well done to everybody at the club on a great season !!!
Have a relaxing winter
Walnut Tree 'A' defeated in Subsidiary Final
The Walnut Tree where defeated in the Subsidiary Cup Final on Sunday 13th September 2009 by Sylvestrians. Although the 'Nut' won by 8 shots the large handicap of 56 against them was always going to be a massive hurdle for them.
Ray Rushton & John O'Connor were the clubs best winners, each winning 21 - 10.
Walnut Duo 'Excel' in Civil Defence pairs final !!!
Robbie Warbrick and Daniel Laven made a dramatic comeback at a rain drenched Crecent Bowling Club in the final of the Litherland Civil Defence Bowling League Pairs Tournament on Sunday 30th September.
Competing against twice past winners Dave Milligan and Ray Rushton, Rob & Danny found themselves 18-9 down, yes 18 - 9 !! They then decided to switch around the lead bowlers. Danny took the lead and played tremendous lead woods onto the block at every end.
The rain lashed down as the pair slowly clawed their way back from beyond the grave.
Well done to both Rob (who wins his first tournament of his career) and Danny, and commisirations to Dave and Ray.
Ray Rushton loses in Bingley Show Chamionship Final

The final however was a different matter with the game at 3 across Dan from nearby 'Shipley Club' found a 20mtr round peg mark at the far end of the green and ran out a convincing 21-4 winner.
Daniel recieves the trophy from 2009 President of the Airedale Agricultural Society Marion Walker

Walnut Tree defeat St James in exciting semi final !!
The Walnut Tree beat St James in the Lewis Cup Semi final on Tuesday 4th August at the Olympic Bowling Club.
The match went down to the wire and eventually the 'Nut' won by 9 chalks. After an excellent start by Gordon Lees, 21 - 3, the 1st four ended up gaining by 11 chalks. The middle four did not fair too well and after 8 blocks St James had a lead of 11, with the last 3 blocks of Ray Rushton, Dave Hough and Rob Warbrick all securing vital wins to take the 'Nut' through to the final on 23rd August at the Farmers Arms, Clubmoor playing Rice Lane at 12.30pm. Both teams off scratch.
'HIGGY' Keeps his 100% Record !!
John Hignett kept his 100% record in the Monday night 1st division, the only player now to have a 100% record. 'Higgy' beat Dave Haskayne 21-4 on his little straight peg mark (What used to be Ray Rushton's, Haha).
At the same time the joint leader Phil Lee of Burscough was well and truly beaten by 'Bocca' after his winning the club championship on Sunday 2nd August (See below). Also for the record in case the writer gets into trouble 'Higgy' also remains unbeaten in the Wednesday night league, even after the Final of the the Dave Butterworth Sheild !!
Keep it up Higgy, we all wanna drink from you at the end of the season on your 40th !!
BOCCA wins the club Championship !!
Brian 'BOCCA' O'Connor (Left) won the Charlie Holsdworth memorial trophy after beating Rob Warbrick in the final on Sunday 2nd August at the Walnut Tree.
From a strong field of 12 players Brian played well all afternoon (We'll all have to get hangovers like Bocca had) and ended up playing the best bowls of the afternoon even though Rob didnt make it to easy after Bocca was cruising away in the early stages Rob fought back after being 14-5 to geting back to 16-19
